SAY HELLO TO EVIE! PLAZA ICES WELCOMES ISLAND'S FIRST ECO

Plaza Ices has this week welcomed the Isle of Wight's first-ever eco-friendly ice cream van to its fleet.

Built by Whitby Morrison in Crewe, the Mercedes Benz with a Euro 6 engine uses new technology so that once the van arrives at its delivery location the engine can be switched off. Battery power and a solar panel system allow the ice cream machine to continue operating, dispensing 99s for all to enjoy.

The battery system is charged up overnight and is topped up during the day by the solar panels mounted on the van's roof.

The new van is also kitted out with a ‘Bean to Cup’ coffee machine and an integrated card payment system, supplied by Island-based business ICR.

Gary and Debbie Hall travelled up to the Whitby Morrison factory on Tuesday to collect their new van, which has been named ‘Evie’ – for Electric Vehicle Ice Cream Experience! The pair say the purchase is something they have been working towards for many years.

Of course, no ice cream van is complete without a classic design. The livery pays homage to the Gurnard Beach Huts and the view from Compton Bay of Tennyson Downs, just some of the regular spots where Evie will be based throughout the Summer. The livery also shows the many water and outdoor activities the Island has to offer.

As well as new battery technology, Evie is eco-friendly because of the edible tubs that are used for the ice cream sundaes served. These new tubs have proven popular with customers over the past 12 months and have helped contribute to a complete reduction in plastic waste.

Plaza Ices’ Evie – or Hutty, their other van – can usually be found on Princes Esplanade in Gurnard every day (except Mondays) from 12noon.

The vans will continue to serve Kelly's Cornish Whippy ice cream, as well as vegan and dairy-free products too.
